Results of fault-slip analyses across northern Switzerland showing regionally well constrained Late Miocene shortening. Bars show the orientation of the maximum horizontal stress axis (σ1), scales of grey indicating the tectonic regime. The contoured plot of all reconstructed σ1 axes shows that on the regional scale, σ1 trends roughly NW–SE to NNW–SSE but NNE–SSW to NE–SW orientations are also observed (see text for discussion). Numbers refer to the outcrops listed in Tables 1 and 3. The fracture datasets underlying the fault-slip analyses are shown in Fig. 13 for selected outcrops
