Cross-plot is showing the relationship between the average seismic velocity and the effective porosity. The values of the seismic velocities were calculated at 40 MPa confining pressure using the empirical formula of Wepfer and Christensen (1991). A clear negative trend confirms the general observation that the seismic velocity decreases with increasing effective porosity. The significant dispersion in the velocity-porosity relationship, particularly for the shear velocity, can be related to other controlling factors such as the mineralogy, grain size, grain shape and pore geometry.
